Big investment in green solutions pays off

  • First Czech hotel to use 100 % renewable sources for the HVAC system, cooking, washing, etc.
  • Hotel records first water recycling system in the Czech Republic and the second greywater system with heat recuperation in the world

Mosaic House, a hotel in Prague, the Czech Republic, promotes eco-friendliness in perfect balance with guest comfort and aesthetics. The British-German-American team behind the hotel, which opened in 2010, had a vision to transform the old building into a modern environmentally-friendly hotel.

Water- and energy saving technologies include solar panels on the roof, triple-glazed windows, low-flow rain-dance shower heads, motion-sensitive thermostats in rooms, facade thermal insulation, and automatic blinds that optimise sunlight for heating and cooling. The greywater recycling system, located in a special room in the basement, also contains a heat recuperation unit reusing shower water for toilets and for heating up cold water.

Key results

Approximately three months of the year Mosaic House does not have to use energy to heat water and it saves around 4 000 litres of water and 100 kWh of electricity every day. The entire project, including building reconstruction, cost more than 400 million Czech crowns (about € 15.5 million), and the investment in green solutions made up a large part of that. Mosaic House was also the first hotel in the Czech Republic to achieve the BREEAM In-Use 'Excellent' certification.
